  • Cinderella

Mention the Rogers and Hammerstein's musical "Cinderella" to the average Baby Boomer generation female and chances are good it will produce a fond response.
The original production, which was developed expressly as a television special, aired on March 31, 1957 and starred Julie Andrews, who was fresh off her Broadway success in "My Fair Lady." The show attracted some 107 million viewers - 60 percent of the American population at the time. For many years, the original "Cinderella" held the record for the highest number of viewers of any television program ever aired. Ironically, because videotaping technology was rudimentary at the time, the production was a one-time event.
That changed in 1965 when CBS presented a second television "Cinderella" production. This time Lesley Ann Warren had the lead role in the lavish, color production. The musical would air annually for the next eight years and watching "Cinderella" beca
  • Jesus was meek and mild but not weak and wimpy

How do you picture Jesus? I don't mean, "Long hair, beard, robe, etc." I mean, what was Jesus like?
What do you think his personality and demeanor were? If you think of Jesus as being meek and humble, you'd be right. The Bible certainly describes Jesus in this way. For instance, the prophet Isaiah says, "He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth."
But don't make the mistake of thinking that Jesus was not just meek but weak. Jesus was humble, but that doesn't mean he was a wimp. That became obvious on a number of occasions. For instance, a few months before his crucifixion, as Jesus was making his way to Jerusalem knowing full well what was in store, a group of pharisees warned him of King Herold's plot to take his life. In reality, the pharisees themselves were scheming to do away with Jesus. Rather than turning and fleeing, Jesus told them, "Go tell that fox ... I must keep going today and tomorrow and the nex

Hidden Gems enjoys widespread support from broad base
The people working on the Hidden Gems Campaign include a fifth generation Coloradoan whose family has been ranching for decades, two journalists, two cartographers and several professionals with advanced degrees. Some of us have other jobs in addition to the work we put in for Hidden Gems. One of us is a lawyer. Another sells outdoor equipment. We are in our 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Some of us have families, while others have yet to. Most of us have lived in Colorado for much, if not all, of our lives.
We have been reaching out to various stakeholders and user groups in the White River and Gunnison national forests for years. These are our neighbors. We take their input and concerns seriously, and have made significant adjustments to our proposal to meet their needs and concerns. That process is under way now with ranchers, mountain bikers, fire fighters, government representatives and motorized recreation groups represented by the

    Head in the sand
An officer contacted a driver for running a red light in Gypsum Feb. 20.
The officer asked to see the driver's license, insurance and registration. Dispatch confirmed the man's license was revoked for three alcohol convictions. The man said he didn't know his license was revoked because he never received a letter from the state.
The man was arrested and taken to jail. Police made sure to provide him with a proof-of-service form.

    All a board ...
Security cameras tipped police to a snowboard theft in progress on Vail Mountain Feb. 2.
A 21-year-old man was recorded taking a snowboard and hiding it near a "coal train car." Vail Mountain Security identified the man as a cook at an on-mountain restaurant, where police eventually contacted him.
The suspect initially said the snowboard belonged to his roommate who had called and asked him to hide the board. After some grilling he confessed that he had intended to steal the board but g
  • Eagle Cops

    Not a suggestion
Eagle Police were called to the Eagle County Justice Center last week when a local man reportedly violated a freshly issued restraining order.
At the courthouse, a local woman told police she had just completed a hearing regarding a permanent restraining order against the man. She said the judge had issued the permanent order and detailed its provisions during the hearing.
While she was waiting in line at the court clerk window to receive her copy of the restraining order, the woman said the man named in the document approached her and allegedly made a threatening comment. A court representative confirmed that the man spoke to the woman in violation of the order.
When the woman called Eagle Police to report the incident, she told the officer she was afraid to go out to the parking lot because the man could be waiting for her. She claimed the man has no respect for the law, as demonstrated by his violating the restraining order just minutes after it was issued.
